What is an Alexandrite laser?

ELITE+ is a high-performance medical laser that delivers fast, remarkably effective results. Thanks to its different wavelengths, it can provide permanent hair removal for all skin types.

At The Laser Clinic, this latest-generation laser is available for light, tanned or dark skin. It is the Alexandrite/YAG laser, recognised as the safest and most effective on the market in this field.

Today, laser treatments are unanimously validated by scientific research as the most effective method for permanent hair removal. For over 30 years, they have been the undisputed benchmark in aesthetic technology.

Are there several categories of lasers?

There are in fact several types of laser, as well as IPL technology (which, it should be remembered, is not a laser). Some lasers offer excellent results, while others have limited or only temporary effects.

At The Laser Clinic, we use a medical laser. This device comprises two technologies: the Alexandrite laser, suitable for light skin, and the YAG laser, designed for darker skin.

How does laser hair removal work?

Cynosure laser hair removal treatments work by targeting and destroying the cells responsible for hair regrowth, while preserving the integrity of the surrounding skin. This technology results in smooth, soft and permanently clear skin.

The sessions are generally well tolerated and virtually painless, although the sensation may vary from person to person. Patients often describe a mild tingling sensation or a feeling similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin.

The duration of the treatment depends on the area concerned and can vary from 5 to 40 minutes.

What is the frequency and number of sessions for laser hair removal?

The number of sessions required varies according to several factors: the area treated, the density and thickness of the hair, and the type of skin. On average, between 6 and 8 sessions are needed to achieve a lasting reduction in hair growth.

Sessions are generally spaced 8 weeks apart, to target hair at the optimum growth stage. This regularity ensures progressive and lasting results, with smooth, clear skin.

Why are the sessions spaced out every two months?

To be effective, the laser must reach the hair follicle via the melanin (the pigment in the hair). The treatment is most effective when the hair is in the active growth phase (stage 1), because at this stage the laser can destroy the root.

When hair is in stage 2 or 3, the follicle is not fully targeted, which can lead to new hair growth. As the hair growth cycle repeats itself approximately every two months, several sessions are needed to treat all the hairs at the right time.

On average, 6 to 8 sessions will produce satisfactory results. For optimal, long-lasting results, it is then recommended that you have a maintenance session once a year.

Laser treatment is a safe and effective way of removing unwanted hair, provided it is sufficiently dark and thick. After each session, hair becomes less numerous and finer. With the entire treatment, up to 95 % of hair can be permanently eliminated.

However, over the years, the body can produce new hair under the influence of hormones or other factors. In this case, maintenance treatment may be necessary to remove them effectively.

What precautions should be taken before and after laser hair removal?

Before treatment :

- Avoid exposure to the sun and sunbeds for at least 2 weeks before the treatment. If the treated area is exposed, apply a high SPF sunscreen or cover the area as much as possible.

- On the day of treatment, do not apply make-up, cream, lotion or deodorant to the areas to be treated.

- 1 or 2 days before the session, be sure to shave the area to be treated. It is preferable not to do this just before the session.

- For 6 weeks before and throughout the treatment, do not use any depilatory cream and stop waxing or tweezing (only shaving is permitted).

After treatment :

- In the 24 hours following the session, avoid hot showers or baths, as well as saunas and steam rooms, and do not swim.

- Avoid the sun and sunbeds for at least 2 weeks after treatment, or protect the area with a high-protection sunscreen or covering clothing.
